Most people understand something about the process of Website Design but few outside of the industry understand the art of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). In fact most people assume that once their website is on the web… all they have to do is sit back and wait for the enquiries to start flooding in.
If only life were that simple!
At WM Web Design we know how confusing it can all be, so we’ve tried to explain SEO to you in a no nonsense way….. hope it helps!
What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
In simple terms SEO is a process which helps Google, Yahoo, Bing and the other search engines, to find relevant and influential websites when someone types a search query into their browser search box.
The Search Engines then list those sites in the order that they decide is the most helpful to the searcher.
The object of SEO is to make sure that your site is as high as possible in those returned results.
The higher you are in the Search Results, the more chance your URL will be clicked, and if your website is eye catching, easy to navigate and has the right content… those enquiries will start coming in.
If you want a more in depth definition, take a look at the definition of SEO provided by Wikipedia.
It is not the job of search engine optimization to make a pig fly. It is the job of the SEO to genetically reengineer the Web site so that it becomes an eagle. — Bruce Clay
Search Engine Optimisation… the basics
This is a great little video that explains the basics of SEO in just over three minutes… well worth a watch.
There you go folks the five basic ingredients for the perfect SEO recipe. Words, titles, links, words in links, and reputation.
And if you get all that right, Google is sure to love you.
Who needs Search Engine Optimisation?
And every other business website on the internet.
A business which is in competition with other businesses (and which business isn’t?) and wants to be found ahead of their rivals has to be on that first page of the search results.
Truth to tell, to get the best results from your website… you have to be in the first five results!
It’s not enough to have a website. If people can’t find you when they search… why have you got a website?
Don’t forget, WWW stands for World Wide Web so there’s a lot of competition out there and most of them are using SEO.
The process of Search Engine Optimisation…
The process starts by discussing with you what your business is about and what key words / target words your visitors will type into the search engines for your goods or services e.g. if people are looking for sports cars in Solihull, they will probably type in “sports cars Solihull”.
We then use the built-in SEO capabilities of the Genesis theme framework to optimise each page of your site for specific keywords and phrases.
From advice on choice of domain name to verification of your website with Google, WM provide you with a complete SEO service.
